UPI can be used for almost any purpose. It can be used to send and receive money from friends, to make bill payments, buy movie tickets, pay for food deliveries, pay for cab rides, for online shopping, at local stores, fuel stations, chemist stores and even to invest in an IPO.
Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is an instant payment system which allows you to instantly send and receive money.
UPI PIN (UPI Personal Identification Number) is a 4-6 digit pass code you create/set during first time registration with a BHIM UPI enabled App. This PIN is required for you to allow your account to be debited for transactions while sending money to others. A UPI PIN should never be shared or disclosed with anyone and should always be entered only on your own phone and on the UPI PIN page of a BHIM UPI enabled app.
UPI ID is your identity for people to easily send you money or ask you for money. This ID is usually a combination of your name, number with an ‘’@’’ symbol ending with a bank name or UPI. Eg- name@upi, 9000XXXX@upi, name@bankname etc
In case someone forgets the UPI PIN, they need to generate a new UPI PIN using his debit card details (the last six digits of their debit card and expiry date).
You can set your UPI PIN on any BHIM UPI enabled app using your debit card details.
Yes, several bank accounts can be linked to the same UPI ID depending on the functionalities being made available on different BHIM UPI enabled apps.
No, a customer cannot link a wallet to UPI, only bank accounts can be linked to UPI.
Please ensure that the mobile number linked to your bank account is the same as the one verified in any BHIM UPI enabled app. If it is not the same, your bank account will not be validated by the UPI platform.
In case of change in the BHIM UPI enabled app, a person needs to register again and the app needs to create a new UPI ID with the handle of the PSP.
Yes, a customer needs to register with his/her 3rd party app before remitting funds using UPI and link his accounts
No, registration of a beneficiary is not required for transferring funds through UPI as the funds would be transferred on the basis of UPI ID/Account+IFSC/BHIM UPI QR. (Please check with your PSP and issuing bank with regard to the services enabled on the app).
In case of UPI transaction, the beneficiary needs to be registered for UPI and have a UPI ID but in case of Account + IFSC, the beneficiary need not be registered for UPI. (Please check with your Payment Service Providers and issuing bank with regards to the services enabled on the BHIM UPI Apps).
The transaction will fail if you enter the wrong UPI PIN.
Once you complete a transaction, you should see a success status on the BHIM UPI enabled app screen and receive an SMS from your bank. In some cases, due to operator issues it can take longer to receive this message. In case you have not received your confirmation within an hour please contact the customer support of your bank.
UPI provides for real time reversals for declines and amount will be transferred back to the payer account immediately. In case the amount is not immediately reversed, you can contact your bank for the same.
In case of a failed transaction the money will be refunded back to your account. Sometimes this takes longer than intended. If you do not receive the refund within 1 hour, please contact the customer support of your bank.
Your transaction is successful, but due to some issue at the beneficiary’s bank end, there is a delay. The amount will reach him/her in 48 hours, once the bank is done with its daily settlements.
When you shop online, you can pay through UPI when you see UPI as a payment option. On clicking the UPI option, you will need to enter your UPI ID (eg - xyz@upi). Once entered, you will receive a Money request on your BHIM UPI enabled app. Enter your UPI PIN here and your payment will be complete.

At present, the upper limit per UPI transaction is Rs.1 Lakh per account per day. This amount varies from Bank to Bank hence please check on the same with your respective bank. (For IPO application the limit has been increased to Rs. 2 Lakh per transaction using UPI)

If you lose your phone, the UPI PIN is required to authorise all transactions which will not be known to any third person and hence they will not be able to use the BHIM UPI enabled app. In addition, please contact the customer support of your bank in case you lose your phone.
In case of change in SIM/mobile/application of the BHIM UPI enabled app, customer would need to register again for UPI.
Not really. In any transaction, the UPI PIN would be needed to be entered through the mobile on the BHIM UPI enabled app PIN page. So, do not share your UPI PIN with anybody, ever.
Yes, you can use more than one BHIM UPI enabled app on the same mobile and link both same as well as different accounts.
