Where can I use UPI?

UPI can be used for almost any purpose. It can be used to send and receive money from friends, to make bill payments, buy movie tickets, pay for food deliveries, pay for cab rides, for online shopping, at local stores, fuel stations, chemist stores and even to invest in an IPO.

What is UPI?

Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is an instant payment system which allows you to instantly send and receive money.

What is UPI PIN?

UPI PIN (UPI Personal Identification Number) is a 4-6 digit pass code you create/set during first time registration with a BHIM UPI enabled App. This PIN is required for you to allow your account to be debited for transactions while sending money to others. A UPI PIN should never be shared or disclosed with anyone and should always be entered only on your own phone and on the UPI PIN page of a BHIM UPI enabled app.

What is UPI ID?

UPI ID is your identity for people to easily send you money or ask you for money. This ID is usually a combination of your name, number with an ‘’@’’ symbol ending with a bank name or UPI. Eg- name@upi, 9000XXXX@upi, name@bankname etc

What happens if I forget my UPI PIN?

In case someone forgets the UPI PIN, they need to generate a new UPI PIN using his debit card details (the last six digits of their debit card and expiry date).

How do I set up UPI PIN with the bank directly?

You can set your UPI PIN on any BHIM UPI enabled app using your debit card details.

Can I link more than one bank account to the same UPI ID?

Yes, several bank accounts can be linked to the same UPI ID depending on the functionalities being made available on different BHIM UPI enabled apps.

Does a customer need to have a bank account or can they link UPI to a card or wallet?

No, a customer cannot link a wallet to UPI, only bank accounts can be linked to UPI.

I have selected the Bank name to link with UPI but it does not fetch my bank A/C detail?

Please ensure that the mobile number linked to your bank account is the same as the one verified in any BHIM UPI enabled app. If it is not the same, your bank account will not be validated by the UPI platform.

If I change my UPI app will I be required to register again or can I use the same UPI ID?

In case of change in the BHIM UPI enabled app, a person needs to register again and the app needs to create a new UPI ID with the handle of the PSP.

Does a customer need to register before remitting funds using UPI?

Yes, a customer needs to register with his/her 3rd party app before remitting funds using UPI and link his accounts

Does the customer need to register a beneficiary before transferring funds through UPI? What details of beneficiary will be required?

No, registration of a beneficiary is not required for transferring funds through UPI as the funds would be transferred on the basis of UPI ID/Account+IFSC/BHIM UPI QR. (Please check with your PSP and issuing bank with regard to the services enabled on the app).

Does the beneficiary also have to register for UPI for receiving funds?

In case of UPI transaction, the beneficiary needs to be registered for UPI and have a UPI ID but in case of Account + IFSC, the beneficiary need not be registered for UPI. (Please check with your Payment Service Providers and issuing bank with regards to the services enabled on the BHIM UPI Apps).

What happens if I enter wrong UPI PIN during a transaction?

The transaction will fail if you enter the wrong UPI PIN.

I have paid for my transaction but not received anything. Why is that?

Once you complete a transaction, you should see a success status on the BHIM UPI enabled app screen and receive an SMS from your bank. In some cases, due to operator issues it can take longer to receive this message. In case you have not received your confirmation within an hour please contact the customer support of your bank.

What if my account is debited but the transaction does not go through?

UPI provides for real time reversals for declines and amount will be transferred back to the payer account immediately. In case the amount is not immediately reversed, you can contact your bank for the same.

My UPI transaction has failed but my bank account has been debited.

In case of a failed transaction the money will be refunded back to your account. Sometimes this takes longer than intended. If you do not receive the refund within 1 hour, please contact the customer support of your bank.

My transaction is showing “Pending”. The amount has been debited and has not been credited in the person’s account I sent the money. Is there a problem?

Your transaction is successful, but due to some issue at the beneficiary’s bank end, there is a delay. The amount will reach him/her in 48 hours, once the bank is done with its daily settlements.

How do I pay an online merchant through UPI?

When you shop online, you can pay through UPI when you see UPI as a payment option. On clicking the UPI option, you will need to enter your UPI ID (eg - xyz@upi). Once entered, you will receive a Money request on your BHIM UPI enabled app. Enter your UPI PIN here and your payment will be complete.

How can I view my transaction history?

Go to Home Screen ->Transaction History, to view all your past and pending transactions. Please note this flow would differ from app to app.

What are the different modes for transferring funds using UPI?

The different modes for transferring funds using UPI are:

  • Send/Collect through UPI ID
  • Send via Account Number + IFSC
  • Scan and pay
  • Share QR and pay
  • Payment links in merchant apps
Where do I register a complaint with reference to a UPI transaction?

You can raise your grievance or check status of a UPI transaction through the BHIM UPI enabled app of the participating banks or PSP.

Do money transfers happen on UPI only during banking hours?

All payments are instant and 24/7, regardless of your bank's working hours.

What is the limit of fund transfer using UPI?

At present, the upper limit per UPI transaction is Rs.1 Lakh per account per day. This amount varies from Bank to Bank hence please check on the same with your respective bank. (For IPO application the limit has been increased to Rs. 2 Lakh per transaction using UPI)

Will UPI ever auto-deduct payments from my account?

Any debit from your account would require your UPI PIN to authorise a debit on your account. UPI will only auto debit your account in case you opt for recurring debit for bill payments, or if you have invested in an IPO or you have gifted a friend via UPI for a future date.

What if I change my mobile carrier?

If you change your mobile carrier but your number is the same you will need to go through the registration process to verify the SIM again.

What if I change my handset?

If you change your handset, you will need to:

  • Download the BHIM UPI enabled app again
  • Register through mobile verification
  • Your UPI ID will be auto saved
What if I lose my phone?

If you lose your phone, the UPI PIN is required to authorise all transactions which will not be known to any third person and hence they will not be able to use the BHIM UPI enabled app. In addition, please contact the customer support of your bank in case you lose your phone.

Will I be able to use UPI after I change my SIM or mobile?

In case of change in SIM/mobile/application of the BHIM UPI enabled app, customer would need to register again for UPI.

In case my mobile is used by another person, will there be any security breach?

Not really. In any transaction, the UPI PIN would be needed to be entered through the mobile on the BHIM UPI enabled app PIN page. So, do not share your UPI PIN with anybody, ever.

Can I use more than one UPI application on the same mobile if they are linked to different bank accounts?

Yes, you can use more than one BHIM UPI enabled app on the same mobile and link both same as well as different accounts.
